John k. matsumoto

JOHN K. MATSUMOTO was born and raised in Honolulu and graduated from Iolani School. He received his undergraduate degree from University of Southern California and his Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law. John is a member of the Probate and Estate Planning, Tax Law and Elder Law Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association as well as having served as Treasurer of the Elder Law Section. He is also a frequent lecturer on estate planning and has hosted a weekly radio program on estate planning, probate and trust administration. John has also authored a chapter in the Encyclopedia of Estate Planning sponsored by the Hawaii State Bar Association.

In his spare time, John serves on the Board of Directors for the Diamond Head Theatre. Previously, John has served on the Advisory Board for the Hawaii Lupus Foundation where he has also served as a Board of Director and Treasurer. John has also served as a Board of Director for the Greater East Honolulu Community Association and Best Buddies. He has been a mentor for the University of Hawaii Business Plan Competition and High School Business Plan Competition. John was also an assistant varsity boys' basketball coach for Kalani High School. John currently is the head coach for his daughter’s club basketball team and an assistant varsity girls’ basketball coach for Mid Pacific School.

For the years, 2016-2020, John was recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in Hawaii and in 2017-2020, John was recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America. From 2011 through 2013, John was recognized as a Five Star Wealth Manager in Honolulu Magazine and Hawaii Business Magazine. This award recognizes the top seven percent of wealth managers in the Honolulu metropolitan area. In 2008, John was honored as a young business leader by Pacific Business News for their “Forty and Under 40 Award.” In 2004, John was selected as a member of the Pacific Century Fellows, a program patterned after the White House Fellows that chose a select group of Hawaii’s young leaders.

Prior to entering the practice of law, John served as an Acquisition Specialist doing Mergers and Acquisitions in Los Angeles, California and as an Accounting Manager for Century Small Business Solutions in Honolulu.
